Living the 3D Focus: Discipleship

The past couple months in “The Well,” we have discussed what MCCW refers to as, “Calling on the 3D Focus,” introducing the three main areas of focus for our MCCW sisters in Christ throughout the world. MCCW’s 3D Focus includes intentionally using the tools we possess to develop, discern, and live as a disciple. Two months ago, we explored a deeper connection with Discernment. Last month, we went further into the pillar of Development.

As the 2023-2024 program year gears up for CWOC groups throughout the world, this month we will explore what discipleship means, and what it looks like for individuals within our greater MCCW community.

Development has been defined by MCCW as, “Following Jesus while continually being changed by Christ and living out our baptismal call to lead others to the Cross by sharing the Gospel.”

Discipleship

Theologians have often described Mary as the “first disciple.”

From the moment of her “fiat,” or her “yes,” to the moment her body was assumed into Heaven, she kept her loving sights on her baby Boy. As most mothers can attest, no matter the age of our children, their birth order, or where they find themselves in the world, they will always be our baby.

While steeped in controversies, Mel Gibson’s, “The Passion of the Christ,” vividly depicted Mary’s steadfast glimpse on her “Baby,” as she rushed to provide the briefest moment of comfort on His Passion to the Crucifixion. Gibson’s portrayal included a flashback of Mary rushing to the side of a fallen toddler-Jesus, just as she rushed to the side of the fallen Christ as He carried His Cross. Recently watching this past Lent as a mother, the scene caused me to catch my breath.

Through Mary’s example, we are given the opportunity to reflect on a couple major points in our own discipleship walk:

  • How often do we say yes to God’s will, even when we know there will be uncertainty and perhaps pain?
  • How do we tenderly nurture Christ and His role in our lives today?
  • What ways are we focused on consoling His Sacred Heart?
  • Where is God calling me to serve as His hands and feet to another person?

Download a copy of these questions to pray over during the course of July. Spend some time considering how you would like to better develop on your spiritual journey.

3D Summation

Discernment, Development, and Discipleship are daily goals to hone.

Our God is such a loving God, Who created us with free will. He doesn’t impose Himself on any of us. Instead, He simply invites us into His outstretched arms.

To reciprocate His embrace, all we must do is reach back.

The question for each of us to ponder and pray about really is not “how,” we choose to embrace the 3D Focus, but rather, is a more personal, intimate question:

Am I ready to allow God to guide me discern, develop, and live as a disciple?

In Christ,
